How do you engage and captivate your learners from the moment they click BUY. That is such a common question. How many courses have you taken, or programs have you joined that captured you from the very first moment? Took you by the hand and lead you through to the very end? How did you feel about those experiences? And how did you feel about the program or course owner? Now think about a course or program that started right in with great content, and more content, a bonus or two, and more content, workbooks and action guides, etc. Great volume and value, but did you consume everything? Did you know when and where to use each piece, did you get overwhelmed?
The Problem
Too often course creators think that giving lots of content is adding value, so they inundate the learner with more and more, checklists, resource lists, profiles, templates, etc. More isn’t always valuable. I know my hard drive is filled with folders of content from programs and courses that I downloaded, but never looked at. What is the end result? For me, I didn’t move forward with the Coach or Teacher because I wasn’t really engaged with them and the content was just content, in the end.
The Solution
Value is having something I can use, that solves my problem or allows me to achieve the promised results. There is nothing more satisfying than achieving something you didn’t know how to achieve until you learned how! That is how you engage your learners and participants, helping them, with every step, every module, every exercise, to achieve the thing they are striving to achieve.
Whether your course is self-paced, instructor-led, video-based, or a coaching program, you can build engagement into the program from the beginning. Ideally, if you can include even a small amount of personal touch, whether it is with you, or one of your team, that really creates engagement, accountability and promotes confidence and brand loyalty. Or maybe you have a private group portal like Facebook where they can interact with others on the same journey, this promotes engagement and motivation to move forward or even take the next steps. Even with stand-alone self-paced courses, you can create engagement using stories, use-cases, anecdotes, and analogies. Help the learner see themselves achieving the results and keep that image at the forefront of their journey. If you can keep them engaged you can help them complete the course or program, leaving them with positive feelings about you and your brand. These learners will more likely refer to you, or even take your next program. Isn’t that the whole idea?
